Border pass across the alps...
Since turn of the millennium the conception rata stands for extreme cycling in Nauders. Mr. Max Wassermann who was the former successful promoter of the 3-countries-giro brought rata into being together with Mr. Othmar Peer and Mr. Franz Venier. This event experienced its baptism by fire in the year 2000. Mr. Franz Venier who is a well known Tyrolean extreme athlete and holder of numerous records acted as a subject and he wanted to show that it is possible to master 11 mountains of the horse category with over 13,000 metres in altitude within 32 hours.
Documented by television station ORF the long haul star never faltered and therefore he reached the finish relatively relaxed after 27 hours. It was also possible and one year later the race across the alps experienced its premiere. What a premiere! At the first go no long haul star gained the top but the successful pro cyclist Mr. Gerrit Glomser from Salzburg, the later double winner of the Austrian tour who just came directly from the tour de Suisse. Rain, snow and storms accompanied the 30 favoured few across the alps. In the year 2002 u. 2006 Mr. Paul Lindner who was the Austrian king of marathon and ironically from Salzburg won. Also he and his comrades-in-arms had to scratch along all variants of weather you can imagine. In the meantime RATA obtained a never expected popularity by widely spread TV and media presence (the cycle magazine TOUR showed a seven-sided review at the premiere - the television station RTL broadcasted live and over 40 other television stations adopted the pictures of the broadcaster). As a result further top stars went to this enduringness event of the extra class. Mr. Wolfgang Fasching (AUT), Mr. Jure Robi (SLO) and Mr. Andrea Clavedetscher (FL) winner of the RAAM paid the compliment as well as Mr. Marko Baloh (SLO), Mr. Herbert Meneweger (AUT), Mr. Franz Venier (AUT) or the winner of the year 2003 u. 2008 Mr. Maurizio Vandelli from Italy – a pro cyclist who managed to win the Austrian round-trip. In the year 2004 the winner was the young Austrian newcomer Mr. Valentin Zeller and in the year 2005 the winner was Mr. Daniel Wyss from Switzerland. In the year 2007 Mr. Rene Fischer from Zell am See (AUT) won the race.
The main reason for the fascination and the myth Race across the alps might be the names of the mountain giants bordering one each other who had already written cycling history because of the Giro and the Tour de Suisse. Stilfserjoch, Gaviapass, Mortirolo, Ski Arena Aprica stand for suffering, drama and success stories at the Giro d´Italia – the passes Bernina, Albula, Flüela, Ofen and Umbrail stand for Swiss cycling history. Summarized - divided into the three alpine countries Austria, Italy and Switzerland stand for RATA – which have tried 292 men and 6 women up to now. Yes, correct, also a long-distances-approved lady, Mrs. Cassie Lowe from Australia hazard the adventure and she admitted freely that this event pushed her until her limit of performance and sometimes above like all others who were involved or who will try in future. The current active organizer Mr. Gernot Weinig and his team will also try to achieve this unique event for the participants as well as for the location Nauders. Concerning effort and stress this is often much more as a border path.

REGULATIV
Entitled to participate are maximum 50 drivers who will be invited and selected by the operator. The participator has to present adequate long-distance successes resp. has to prove successes as an active racer. The operator is authorized to deny registrations without giving reasons.
Entitled to participate are only drivers from the age of 18.
Every participator has to wear his safety helmet constantly and to fix the start number on it.
You have to enclose a medical approval, which engages that you can come through this extreme event without any damages.
The top 12 of the previous year are authorized to start automatically.
Every participator is only allowed to register one escort vehicle with minimum two caretakers including the driver. We recommend obliging an alternative caretaker to be assured that in case of emergency you do not have any personal bottlenecks.
Slipstream driving behind cars as well as traffic violation will be punished with time penalty or in case of recurrence with disqualification. Slipstream driving behind competitors is not forbidden because of selective topography. At night a working illumination on the bike is required.
You have to take your passports with you for the transit to Switzerland. The routes as well as the altitude profile are evident from various tenders resp. from our homepage www.raceacrossthealps.at. During the briefing all participants receive a road book. The operator is not liable for any happenings resp. accidents before, during or after the event.
The participator is responsible for caring about liability insurance at an authorized Austrian insurance institution.
The route is not closed to traffic that is why the traffic regulations have to be observed rigorously.
Time limit to be rated as a finisher in the 10 th race across the alps amount to 32 hours.
The winners and finishers receive an exclusive RATA-prize as well as cash prizes as follows:
